A Message from the Publisher...

Scene4 has published a new issue every month for nearly 14 years and is now viewed worldwide by over 190,000 readers in 116 countries with comprehensive archives of nearly 8000 pages. As an International Arts and Media Magazine rather than a news&reviews web site, we are grateful for and honored by that readership. Our expansion plans call for new features including a video library, a theatres library, and a writers exchange. However, as with all 'print' publications we are struggling with severely declining revenues and increased costs. Our limited advertising barely covers our overhead, due in small part to our refusal to place distracting advertising at the top or sides of pages. Scene4 is a merged writing/graphics journal - our focus is on the writing and graphics and... the reader's experience.

We need your help to keep moving forward. As Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame recently noted: "If everyone reading this donated as little as $3, our fundraising would be done within an hour." Amen to that!

For more about us, see our Masthead. Our Donations page is Here.

Thank you for any support you can offer and please, keep on... reading.

Maurice Elstein

Three Plays without Words
No 2: The Mazurka

There are no words or props in this play. The actions of the performer are slightly slower and more exaggerated than in real life and become even slower as the play progresses. The scenes are enacted to the accompaniment of the suggested pieces of music, preferably performed live.

Sandeep Girish Bhatnagar

The authorized version of Lester Cole's HOLLYWOOD RED

Hollywood Red: The Autobiography of Lester Cole ©2013 Scene4 Books www.aviarpress.com

One of the founders of the Writers Guild of America and the most unrelenting and outspoken member of the blacklisted Hollywood Ten, Lester Cole was a protégé of the legendary Cecil B. De Mille, a roommate of Cary Grant, a pal of Humphrey Bogart, a gadfly to Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, and then there were... the women in his life.

Scene4 Books is proud to offer the authorized reprint of this controversial autobiography. Timely! Provocative! Startling! Now, after 32 years, a witness to the nightmare of what we did and what we may be doing again.

Few Americans remember the dark days of the House Un-American Activities Committee. From 1938 to 1975 it traveled like a carnival throughout the country, breaking up families, turning friends into enemies, destroying reputations and lives. This is the intimate, inside story of one of the Hollywood Ten, screenwriters and directors jailed for defying HUAC's nightmare of enforced orthodoxy.

"...the best 'inside' book yet about Hollywood under HUAC, a book that brings the whole period, and what came before and after, into frightening clarity, but also a book that is moving, exciting, funny and blessed with humanity."
— Carl Foreman, Director and Screenwriter whose films include High Noon, The Bridge On The River Kwai, Guns of Navarone, Young Man With A Horn and others.
